Dear Parents:

International Night

Returning from camp always welcomes the start of International Night. The children work so hard to prepare for this evening. Everything that happens in elementary for International Night, happens by the children. The role of the adult for this evening is to assist where needed.

Each child is assigned to a group, which is lead by a third year student. The responsibility of the group is to take a long journey through a country in Europe. They explore things such as the food they eat in the country, the money they use, the language they speak, the traditional clothing they wear and so on.

They spend a great amount of time on this research, working collaboratively together. When their research is finalized, they then turn their research into a report. This is a group effort and the students take turns recording what they’ve found. In the midst of writing their report, they begin a project that is related to an area of interest of their country. The students come up with some really creative ideas on how they would like to represent their country in our room.

There are also individual projects that take place for this special evening. Each child does a report on an animal of interest that is native to our continent. They do a bit of research and record facts on their animal and then are able to do a project for that research.

Lastly, the children are paired up to learn about artists from Europe. They learn about specific styles European artists use, facts about the artists themselves and learn about some of the works the artist has created. When their research is completed, they are able to use their artist’s style to create their own piece of art or they can replicate something from that artist.

The amount of work that goes into this evening is immense and the children do it all. They should take great pride in the final product!

If next week, you are able to come in to assist with projects, please do so. Just send me an e-mail letting me know what day works best for you.

Take care and have a great weekend!

Peace,

Ms. Sara, Ms. Danielle, and Mr. Ben
