Dear Parents,

The end of the year gets very busy with school events and extracurricular activities. It is an exciting time that is full of fun, along with the anticipation of summer break! However, along with excitement, stress and anxiety can be prevalent as well.  Here are a few tips for you and your family to remember.

Keep ahead of the schedule so you and your child can be aware of what is happening. Ask your child if there is anything that they could do to prepare items that might be needed that day or you could prepare the night before, so that it is less stressful getting around. This helps your child practice time management and to think about what can be done ahead of time to be fully prepared in case you have to rush. It is less stressful if you know what to expect in advance. You could put together a calendar, just for them, with all the dates and times and hang it at their eye level. Ask them to refer to the calendar to see if they have anything that day and then ask them if there is anything they can do to prepare for their activity. If there are siblings, or if you are particularly busy, you can add other family member’s activities as well.

Taking time out for you and your child, even if it is a quick stop at a roadside park or reading a book. A change of scenery is very important to be able to transition well into another activity.  At this time of year there may be more than one activity happening that day. Make sure to ask your child how they are feeling. Having empathy towards feelings such as being tired, are important to acknowledge. Talk about what relaxing activity they may want to engage in when you get home.

Ask your child what they need and don’t be afraid to skip an activity if it seems like it may be too much.  This is an important life lesson for you and your child. Sometimes it seems like all these activities are very important and that it is very important to not miss any. If it seems like your child is stressed or overly tired, take some time to talk about how they are feeling and their options of what can be done.

As a small reminder to you, at this time of year you all will be getting a plethora of informative e-mails for events that happen in and outside of classroom times!

I look forward to a great rest of the year!

Christine
