Food For Thought

harvest festival 2013This year in our room, we have been enjoying lunch and afternoon snack, family style. We all help set up the tables and chairs, place settings and pass around the food (at snack time) using our very best table manners. This has given us the opportunity to have several lively discussions and learn a little bit more about each other.

One of the topics of discussion has been healthy eating. This is something we constantly strive for in our room, through our snacks, cooking/baking with the children and through modeling how and what we eat. The discussions have mostly centered on sweets and snack foods that often accompany our lunches. We have been modeling for the children the importance of prioritizing fruits and vegetables, grains and protein sources over the less nutritious accompaniments like chips and fruit snacks.

The family style lunch has also exposed the children to a variety of foods from around the world and various dietary restrictions within our classroom family. The children are constantly asking questions about the foods they see in other lunches… foods from China, Korea, India, etc. They are also becoming aware of allergies and dietary differences like vegetarian/vegan diets, nut/soy/dairy allergies etc. We answer their questions to the best of our knowledge. It is certainly heartening to see their curiosity and compassion expressed at the food table.

Due to severe nut allergies, we ask that no nuts or nut-related products come into the building. We request that as you pack your child’s lunch, please read the ingredients list very carefully to avoid any nut-related incidents.

  1. Miss Archana – thanks for the glimpse of what is happening in the classroom! I love that you are sitting down family style with the kids and helping them to understand a little about nutrition and the differences amongst fellow students!
