It always amazes me what children are capable of doing all by themselves, at such a young age.   In the classroom, they take responsibility of the materials, cleaning and organizing them.  They are able to take care of most things in the environment.  The children water the plants; feed the pets; clean the guinea pig cage and straighten materials together throughout the day.  Other tasks they love to do are to help prepare snack and wash dishes, sharpen pencils, sweep and dress themselves.  Since they have such a huge part in maintaining the classroom they have pride and feel a sense of ownership of our environment.  They want to help keep our classroom beautiful.  This can transfer to home.

Children love to help and feel proud when they get to help with tasks around their home.  When your child has responsibilities at home it fosters personal responsibility and independence.  If your child is responsible for certain tasks they will appreciate and care what happens to the items in your home.

Think about what your child could do to help you around the house.  These are just a few things your child can do at home:

* helping prepare meals           *setting the table

*feeding pets                          *folding laundry

*dressing themselves              *unloading dishwasher

*picking up their toys             *making their bed

* washing the table                 * sweeping
