Montessori Radmoor

Welcome to the fall!  It’s truly beautiful outside, and despite this week’s rain, we are enjoying our time outside on our playground.  The grounds at our school are gorgeous all year long.

In our group time together lately we are discussing the changes we see outside in our environment, and the many ways that our surroundings are preparing for the winter months.  We have also been learning about mammals and their characteristics, which leads into talks about vertebrates, which inevitably brings us to…Skeletons!  I like to share information with the children about different skeletons at this time of year because of their frequent visibility as a Halloween decoration.  We have discussed why skeletons are associated with this holiday, and how important the skeleton is in the structure of the animal body.  Take some time to discuss with your child the attributes of a mammal or why we might need our skeletons or pose the question is a whale a mammal? Why?

Thank you to Anjana Susarla for coming to talk with our class last week about Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.  This holiday signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and hope over despair.  Anjana read us a story and we talked about the celebrations.

As always, we appreciate visitors who can take the time to share from their culture, so we can all improve our understanding of cultures.

Before we forget, the potluck was a great time.  The children get so excited to see each other in the evening with their families.  Getting to show their parents work they do each day is an extra added bonus.  We know that life is busy, and we so appreciate you taking the time.  Thank you to those who stayed after to help us clean.

Conferences

Conferences are next week – Monday, Oct. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 31!  I know many of you have signed up through our school web site, but there is still time if you have not.  I really enjoy sharing your child’s successes with you and look forward to it.

As you know the school is closed to students on that Monday and Tuesday in order to accommodate our conference schedule.

Upcoming Events at school

Special Persons Day is a highlight of our social calendar.  Friday, November 17, is the day that primary and elementary classrooms are open to each child’s Special Person to join them.

I know that families have been encouraged to submit the name of their special person to the school, and it will be an exciting day as children welcome grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents or family friends to join them for a day of showing off work, enjoying our school property and the greenhouse.  As always, we welcome dishes to share and desserts for our guests and families, so feel free to sign up through the school’s ivolunteer.

The school bake sale will be held Monday, December 4 through Wednesday, December 6.  All money will be used by the elementary classes to purchase gifts for children in foster care throughout Ingham County.  This time-honored tradition is an excellent way to teach children about shopping for others and giving of their time.  Bake sale items can be purchased at drop off and pick times up in the lobby. Thank you for your support.

Believe it or not – by the next blog, the weather will have turned colder.   It may be time to assess whether you have snow pants and gloves and boots.  WE GO OUTSIDE ALL YEAR LONG and, it’s important to give your child time to practice putting on those cold-weather clothes before they arrive at school.  It eases frustration for them and helps increase outdoor time.

Thanks for reading!

Peace,

Trish
