Montessori Radmoor

December is here and we have some fun activities coming up in the classroom. The children will be making a gift for the family and painting with watercolors. The watercolor paintings will be used as wrapping paper. The painting has already begun. The children are learning how to hold a paintbrush which is great for using their  pincer grasp.

We would like to welcome Milly to our class. She started in November. We are happy to have her join our community.

The children have been interested in sounds and shapes, lately.  Shape books and new shape activities will be on the shelf in December. I plan to make more shape activities over the holidays, so we’ll have new activities for the New Year. We have and will continue to use a variety of bells and drums at group time.

This week we will be using our senses for different smells in small group. Some of the items we will smell are: oranges, cinnamon, vanilla, and pickles. We will then move on to tasting which is the toddler’s favorite activity. I look forward to sharing these experiences with your children.

Two practical life activities the children have been enjoying lately are window washing and sink scrubbing. These activities are easy tasks for young children that can extend to your home. A scrub brush and a little baking soda make the bathroom sink nice and shiny.

We have a busy month and less time to get everything done so vegetable of the month will continue in January where we will take a closer look at cucumbers and pickles. In, November we tried 3 different kinds of squash. Spaghetti squash was the winner. With a little salt and oil the children ate the spaghetti squash enthusiastically. The acorn and butternut squash didn’t get a huge reaction but it was good exposure for the children. Trying new things is always a fun and a good learning experience.

Thanks to everyone who donated to our classroom by taking something from the wish list. We appreciate your generosity. Over winter break spend time with your lovely families and enjoy your children to the fullest. Your children are wonderful people and I enjoy working with them.

Reminder: We are closed December 21 – January 5. School resumes Monday, January 6.
  1. Let’s see what reaction they have to the pickles!
