Montessori Radmoor

One of my fondest childhood memories is of singing songs with my mother.  My mother was a music major in college, so some of the songs she sang may not have been your typical childhood lullabies (for example Zoom Golly or any from popular musicals!).  I believe singing to and with your child is a wonderful gift you can give your child, for free!  Singing will help your child develop communication skills.  Lullabies, song and rhymes of every culture carry the “signature” melodies and inflections of a mother tongue, preparing a child’s ear, voice and brain for language.  Singing simple songs also teaches children how language is constructed and assists in the acquisition of language.  Singing songs with your child will also teach them about tone, beat and rhythm.  It doesn’t matter whether you think you’re a good singer or not.  What matters most to your child is simply that you sing!  From simple “ABC’s” to “Twinkle, twinkle,” or maybe just your favorite song, just sing, sing, sing!

We’ve also been trying out some new recipes here in the Toddler community.  Miss Leslie (our afternoon toddler assistant) recently visited another Montessori school and brought back some new recipes to share.  We’ve made strawberry banana blender muffins, as well as toddler “cookies”.  Here is the recipe for Toddler Cookies.  It is very simple and fun to make with your toddler and has only 3 ingredients!  This is a great opportunity for your toddler to scoop and mix.

Toddler Cookies

¾ cup of sun butter

2 Tablespoons of honey

1 – 1 ½ cups of oatmeal

Options: add raisins, craisins, sunflower seeds, etc.

Mix all ingredients together and roll into walnut sized balls.  Place on a cookie sheet and flatten a bit.  These won’t spread in the oven.  Bake at 375 degrees for about 10 minutes.  Cool on rack and enjoy!

Some upcoming events to remember are: PGA Garage Sale on Saturday May 7th.  Clean out the basement – proceeds to benefit the school.  Friday May 13th is International Night!  It is a really fun family night so please join us.  Volunteers are always needed.  Sign up on ivolunteer to help or ask at the front desk.  On Thursday May 26th is our Toddler Community potluck from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Please join us to celebrate another great year!  This is a great opportunity to meet all our families as both toddler classes (T1 and T2) will be a part of this potluck.

Sincerely,

Erin
