Montessori Radmoor

Week of 10/13/17

Dear Parents,

This week students have been hypothesizing what the chemical reaction would be with a pellet of zinc, tin chloride and sodium hydrogen sulfate. We also looked at dendrite chrysalis that we grew under a microscope and we played around with meniscus curves made by water.

The image to the right is a picture of the dendrites under a microscope.

In addition, we have also been building these elements and solutions with Dots candies and toothpicks, as well as, looking at these chemical arrangements with our VR glasses.

Soon we will begin exploring early humans and how they migrated out of Africa. We will be watching a few documentaries put out by BBC and Nova on these very important beings. What we learned will be revealed at International Night.

We had our community lunch on Friday, October 13. The students hosted and prepared the food for this monthly event and enjoyed miso soup and apple crisp!

It is not too late to sign up for conferences which will be held on October 30 and 31! You may do so on iVolunteer. Time is running out, please sign up so you are able to sign up for the time slot that you prefer.

Thank you!

Week of 10/6/17

This week we have been working with tin, sodium solution and electric currents to grow dendrites in a petri dish. We started with just the experiment and observation. Over the next week, we will be talking about these chemicals and the reaction. On Wednesday we will be growing a tin hedgehog however, the students do not know this yet, so shhhhhhh!

We also had our first “First Friday”! There were many activities or work that was shown today. The Elements Bingo game was very popular as well as fractions, cubing the binomial and basic operations. Some participants were helping a student practice their spelling on the trampoline. The next “First Friday” is November 3rd from 8:40 – 9:15 a.m.

As the weather begins to change into late fall and early winter, please remember to have that cold weather gear ready! I remember when we moved back to Michigan from California and it snowed the week before Halloween!

Please remember to sign up for conferences through iVolunteer and thank you to those who already have. It will be a pleasure to speak to you about your child.

Warmest Regards,
Christine and Sheena
