Montessori Radmoor

Week of 2/16/18

Dear Parents,

The children were so excited to pass out their valentine’s cards this week. They could hardly stand to wait their turn. They were also very excited to have pink waffles with maple syrup and strawberries for snack on Valentine’s Day! There was also a special craft project in the afternoon that some children participated in.

We are now getting ready to celebrate Chinese New Year next week. The children will be practicing writing Chinese characters on our brush painting lesson. They will also make paper lanterns to hang up in class. We will also be having a special snack to celebrate the New Year next week (I have not yet decided what it will be)! We read books and have discussions about what Chinese New Year is. In the past I have had families come in and share their Chinese New Year traditions. I don’t have anyone coming in yet so if you are interested please let me know.

Sometimes in the middle of the school year the children need reminders of the many grace and courtesy lessons we address in the beginning of the year (and throughout).

So we have been working on many grace and courtesies in the classroom:

  • Walking slowly, avoiding work rugs and people
  • Walking around rugs
  • Waiting for your turn to talk and not interrupting
  • Picking up all belongings and putting them away nicely and neatly
  • Using excuse me, thank you and please
  • Washing hands after blowing noses, touching mouths and sneezing
  • Using a soft voice when inside
  • Respecting each other’s opinions and wishes
  • Helping others who need help

Week of 2/9/18

Dear Parents,

It always amazes me what children are capable of doing on their own at such a young age.  In the classroom, they take responsibility of the materials, cleaning and organizing them.  They cut vegetables, wash dishes, sharpen pencils, sweep and dress themselves.

Children love to help and feel proud when they get to help with tasks around their home. When your child has responsibilities at home it fosters personal responsibility and independence. If your child is responsible for certain tasks they will appreciate and care more about what happens to the items in your home.

Think about what your child could do to help you around the house. A few suggestions can be found below:

* helping prepare meals       *setting the table

*feeding pets                      *folding laundry

*dressing themselves          *unloading dishwasher

*picking up their toys          *dusting

*making their bed    *arranging flowers

As your child demonstrates their responsibility, slowly add more tasks. They may come up with a few, too!

Conferences are coming up on March 12th and 13th. Available conference times can be found on iVolunteer. Be sure to sign up for a time!

A new Valentine’s song we have been singing is “Ten Little Valentines;”

One little, two little, three little valentines

Four little, five little, six little valentines

Seven little, eight little, nine little valentines

Ten little valentines for my friends

Have a wonderful weekend!

 Week of 2/1/18

Hi Parents,

We are going to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14. We will exchange cards in the morning. The cards do not need to be addressed to anyone. It is hard for some children to read the names of everyone so it is easier if they don’t have to figure out which cards go to whom.  Your child can write his/her name on their Valentines. We have 27 children in the class, please make sure your child brings enough for every child.

The children have started decorating their Valentine bags and have been talking about exchanging cards. This week the children have been exploring the new valentine themed lessons. The art shelf has been changed to different Valentine works. We have tracing and cutting a heart, gluing valentine sequins, valentine stamps and card making. Some of the practical life materials have been changed to valentine themed containers. The children always seem to be drawn to the materials when they change. In the math area we have cards and counters with hearts. The children can count out hearts and match them to a number.  The older children have been really excited to get lessons on the valentine words in the language area. They have even been creating their own to take home this week. Some children have been learning about the parts of the heart and how they work.

We started singing a new valentine song this week too! With this song we pass around a heart and sing the song repeatedly until we go around the entire group.

Valentine, Valentine

Won’t you be my valentine

Number one, number two, number three it must be you

Won’t you take my heart with you.

Have a wonderful weekend!
